Wood Table

wood table

Design Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, 2014
Solid wood top & legs, die-cast aluminum leg mounts
Made in Germany by Vitra

The Wood Table has an elegant, understated design: made of solid wood, its construction achieves maximum stability with a minimum of structural elements. Distinguished by its archetypal form and precisely balanced proportions, it appears at first glance as though it has always existed, as if we've seen it countless times before. And yet the Wood Table is indeed unique: its legs, made of solid wood with an oval profile, are horizontally connected by strong aluminum bridges that ensure the table's stability and prevent the frameless solid wood top from warping.

The rounded edges on the bottom of the table top are not just a gesture of added comfort. Depending on the viewing angle, they give the table top an especially slender appearance, thus emphasizing the elegance of the overall design. This feature is also found on the Wood Bench, making the two pieces an ideal combination for a variety of settings.

The Wood Table is 35.5" wide and available in several lengths (78.75", 86.5", 94.5", 102.25") and different types of wood (natural oak, core smoked oak or American walnut).

Barber & Osgerby

London-based industrial design studio Barber & Ogersby was established in 1996 by British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. The two men met while studying for their Master's degrees in Architecture at London's Royal College of Art. Their first piece together, the Loop table, secured a relationship with Cappellini and garnered much acclaim. As a team, their multidisciplinary portfolio now encompasses furniture, lighting and product design as well as art and architectural-scale projects. They are both Royal Designers for Industry (RDI) and are past recipients of the Jerwood Applied Arts prize. Both are Honorary Doctors of Arts, and Osgerby is an Honorary Fellow of Ravensbourne. The pair have lectured internationally and their work is held in permanent collections around the world including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; London’s Design Museum; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Significant recent projects include the Tip Ton chair for Vitra (2011) and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Torches.
Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of design. Following in the tradition of Charles & Ray Eames, who have influenced Vitra’s approach to sustainability in many ways, product longevity is central to the company’s contribution to sustainable development; short-lived styling is avoided at all costs. This can be seen most clearly in the classical pieces of furniture that have been used for decades, had several owners and have then even ended up as a part of a collection.
