landmark chair with upholstery

Stately, softly curved, and confident, the Landmark Chair is one of designer Ward Bennett's most well-known works. This sophisticated, graceful chair represents his ability to reduce a design to its essence-allowing function, craftsmanship, and, ultimately, beauty, to be its focus. While carved from solid ash hardwood, Landmark is both lightweight and durable.

While carved from solid ash hardwood, Landmark is both lightweight and durable. The chair's classic English form is graciously scaled to the exact proportions drawn by Bennett and features meticulously detailed French upholstery. Landmark's wide range of upholstery variations offers further versatility and adds style and comfort to both residential and working environments.

Ward Bennett's story is a remarkable one. His career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in the garment district in New York City. At 15, he designed his first clothing collection; at 16 he left for Europe, where he continued working on fashions. Simplicity and comfort were always his goals. Bennett designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics. He is considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He was hailed by the American Institute of Architects for "transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects." Many of Bennett's designs are in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection as well as in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; he is also in Interior Design magazine's Hall of Fame.
