Design Diesel Living by Foscarini, 2015
Pressed glass, steel, lacquered metal, aluminum
Made in Italy by Foscarini

Is it a building game? Is it a comic character? A small domestic robot? Duii is original and fun right from its name which is inspired by one of Donald Duck's nephews. Its hinged arm, held together with wing screws like blocks in a building game, supports a rounded body which in turn brings a multitude of memories and inspirations to mind: retro car headlights, a workman's hard hat but also the Mohican style head on the Diesel logo. Created for playful, quirky spirits, the free cable and compact size of the 'mini' version makes it perfect for use as a table or wall lamp. It is available in two color variants: bright yellow in the 'men at work' style and a warm shade of sober but simultaneously technological grey. Duii Mini's decorated box tells its story and completes the look of this perfect gift idea.

Duii Mini offers direct and orientable light. The head of the adjustable diffuser is made of powder-coated die cast aluminium. The molded poly-prismatic glass is sand-blasted on the inside and polished on the outside, with a vintage finish like the headlight of an old car. The rod is made of powder-coated steel with a black galvanized butterfly screw. The molded Zink alloy base is powder-coated with a polished satin finish metal plate with the Diesel logo on the back; black switch and electrical cable. Customized packaging with designs expressly created to tell the story of the Duii mini with irony.

Riccardo Olivieri set up Foscarini Spa in Murano in 1981. Two years later, they debuted their catalog, with lamps from Carlo Urbinati and Allesandro Vecchiato, who would become the company's managers by 1988. Eventually these new owners would move the company off the island and into Venice, as well as transition Foscarini from a glassworks shop to a major design competitor. They had already begun working with external designers in 1985, but their first success came in 1990 with Rodolfo Dordoni's "Lumiere" Most all lighting projects were made of glass until 1993, at which point the Havana lamp primarily used polyethylene, making it lighter, more cost-effective, and able to be used indoors and outdoors. It now resides in the MoMA in New York. Other successful lamps would come to define the company, such as the "Mite & Tite" series by Marc Sadler in 2000 (which earned a Compasso d'oro), Patricia Urquiola's 2005 "Caboche" and Marc Sadler's signature lamp "Twiggy."
