Design Diesel Living by Foscarini, 2015
Blown sandblasted glass, varnished aluminum
Made in Italy by Foscarini

Diesel's rock soul has taken shape in two lamps, which are independent but complementary. Inspired by percussion instruments, Crash resembles a cymbal while Bell looks just as its name suggests. Both are available in bronze or aluminium colors and have been given a surface treatment with small, concentric grooves. They both use the same multi-faceted blown glass element resembling vintage glassware which projects beams of fragmented light onto the diffuser's metal surface and at the same time leaves the naked bulb in full view in a clear reference to the world of industry. It is this two-fold light effect that gives Crash & Bell its powerful and unique impact. On their own, as a twosome or in groups, they steal the limelight in any young domestic environment or alternative contract environment.

Crash & Bell are suspension lamps with semi-diffused and direct down light. Diffuser is made of transparent hand-blown glass, the lower half of which is also sandblasted by hand. The two reflectors are made of a slab of aluminum, turned in a steel mold to ply it into shape, and then turned in a Teflon mold to achieve the characteristic stripes. The aluminum color version is painted matt transparent on the inside and glossy transparent on the outside. The bronze version is painted glossy bronze color both on the inside and on the outside. Diesel logo silk-screen printed onto the polycarbonate/injection molded ABS mount, which is vacuum metallised. Stainless steel suspension cable and transparent electrical cable. Ceiling flange with galvanized metal bracket and glossy white batch-dyed ABS cover.

Riccardo Olivieri set up Foscarini Spa in Murano in 1981. Two years later, they debuted their catalog, with lamps from Carlo Urbinati and Allesandro Vecchiato, who would become the company's managers by 1988. Eventually these new owners would move the company off the island and into Venice, as well as transition Foscarini from a glassworks shop to a major design competitor. They had already begun working with external designers in 1985, but their first success came in 1990 with Rodolfo Dordoni's "Lumiere" Most all lighting projects were made of glass until 1993, at which point the Havana lamp primarily used polyethylene, making it lighter, more cost-effective, and able to be used indoors and outdoors. It now resides in the MoMA in New York. Other successful lamps would come to define the company, such as the "Mite & Tite" series by Marc Sadler in 2000 (which earned a Compasso d'oro), Patricia Urquiola's 2005 "Caboche" and Marc Sadler's signature lamp "Twiggy."
