Alexander Girard® Splayed Leg Table

alexander girard® splayed leg table

alexander girard® splayed leg table

Design Alexander Girard, 1967
Polished aluminum, marble, nylon glides
Made by Herman Miller®

The Girard Splayed Leg table's elegant materials and expressive form make it an ideal fit for a variety of residential and commercial applications - from bedside table to boardroom accent piece. Available in luxurious black or white marble set atop polished die-cast aluminum legs, the Girard Splayed Leg table offers a modernist take on old world charm.

Trained as an architect, but proficient in all manner of activities, Alexander Girard was introduced to Herman Miller through Charles Eames and George Nelson, established the Herman Miller Textile Division in 1952, and served as its Director of Design until 1973. From his outpost in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he designed over 300 textiles in multitudes of colorways, multiple collections of wallpaper, decorative prints and wall hangings, an expansive group of furniture, and both decorative and useful objects. His many corporate and freelance assignments-including the La Fonda Del Sol restaurant and the total design program for Braniff International-engendered lavish praise for his diverse skills and unique vision.

With a resolute and reserved personality, Girard believed quality should speak for itself-and he did much to propagate the notion that life should be lived with a higher regard for the humanity of one's surroundings. His uncommon way of seeing and admirably undogmatic approach to each new solution resulted in an unparalleled body of work that is not only staggering in sheer volume and creativity, but due to its fundamental qualities of beauty and usefulness, remains completely relevant today.

The Girard Splayed leg table features a polished aluminum splayed-leg base with marble top. Legs have non-adjustable nylon glides.

Alexander Girard

Alexander Girard (1907 – 1993) affectionately known as Sandro, was an architect and a textile designer born in New York City and raised in Florence, Italy. A graduate of the Royal School of Architecture in Rome, Girard refined his skills in both Florence and New York. Girard is widely known for his contributions in the field of American textile design, particularly through his work for Herman Miller (1952 to 1975), where he headed the fabric and textile division and created fabrics for the designs of George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. He also developed a highly sought-after furniture collection for Herman Miller in 1967, building on his designs for Braniff Airlines' lounge and office furniture.
Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company, which opened in 1905, since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of integrity, so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century, the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with modern furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the company produced pieces that would become classics of industrial design.
