emeco superlight™ chair

Design Frank Gehry, 2004
Recycled aluminum
Made in USA by Emeco

From one of the most celebrated architects comes the Superlight chair. Tested to carry 750 pounds, it only weighs 6.5 pounds. The brushed/anodized shell and frame are connected by a hinge, allowing them to flex independently and move with the sitter. Superlight won the 2004 "Good Design" Award and was one of Architectural Record Magazine's top products of 2004. Can be used indoors or out.

Frank Gehry has single-handedly changed conventional ideas about architecture. Recent masterpieces include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Disney Concert hall in Los Angeles. Gehry's unique vision and innovative use of materials has brought him numerous honors. Through his emphasis on collaboration in the creative process, Gehry continues to transcend the boundaries of design.

The Superlight chair conforms to the body as it gently rocks back and forth. The ingenious construction features a light shell that is connected to the frame by hinge allowing energy to flow throughout the chair. Superlight is offered in brushed aluminum and includes soft plastic (TPU) glides.

Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry (b. 1929, Toronto) has been described as the “most important architect of our age” by Vanity Fair, and his buildings are among the most recognizable in the world. His best-known works include the masterful Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the vibrant and playful MIT Stata Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the elegant Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles, and the colorful and psychedelic Experience Music Project in Seattle. Nearly all of his buildings attract tourists and demand attention with their unique and unusual forms.
Founded in 1944 by Wilton C. Dinges, the Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) holds on tightly to their foundation of craftsmanship, utilitarian design, and history. Their origins lie in a collaboration with the aluminum giant Alcoa to develop an indestructible and useful chair for military use in Navy submarines and warships. Today Emeco is led by CEO Gregg Buchbinder who sums up their vision as “design plus craftsmanship.” Looking toward the future, Buchbinder has brought in Philippe Starck and Frank Gehry. With Starck, they developed the Hudson Chair. With Gehry, they created the acclaimed Superlight chair. In 2008, Emeco launched the Nine-O Collection by Ettore Sottsass and in the folowing year the Morgans chair by Andrée Putman, designed for the restored Morgans Hotel.
