Design Eero Aarnio, 2013
Thermoplastic resin
Made by Alessi

For over half a century, and with great consistency, the finnish designer Eero Aarnio has designed brightly colored objects for the house with rounded, geometric shapes that allude to a kind of "children's code." His works, almost all made in plastic, are short, visual tales that combine features both humorous and playful with precise and explicit functional meanings.

Known for such iconic designs as his "Ball Chair", "Pastil Chair" and "Bubble Chair", Finland's Eero Aarnio is one of the leading innovators in contemporary Scandinavian design.

Citrus-squeezer "Citrus" is produced in thermoplastic resin and available in clear.

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio of Helsinki introduced his Ball Chair in 1963, one year after starting his own office. He followed suit with his Bubble Chair, floating Pastil Chair, and Tomato Chair. Using mostly plastic and fiberglass (though he would later abandon fiberglass due to its potential danger to manufacturers), Aarnio’s chairs implemented simple geometric forms and were thus popular as set pieces in 1960s science fiction films, and remain recognizable as such. Many of his furniture designs display a playful element, and currently Aarnio’s new designs include toys, children’s furniture, and combinations of both.
Alessi was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi to produce crafted metal products for eating and drinking. In 1935, Carlo Alessi, son of Giovanni, was named chief designer. In 1945, he ascended to chief executive and designed the coffee service Bombe, an industrial piece manufactured in four sizes. That same year Carlo's younger brother, Ettore Alessi, joined the company as a technician. By the 1980s, Alberto Alessi took over the management of Alessi and launched the Alessi company into the design decade through collaborations with designers such as Philippe Starck and his playful three-legged Juicy Salif citrus squeezer.
