medium cloud bench with no back

Design Naoto Fukasawa, 2006
Tubular steel, polyurethane, upholstery
Made in Italy by B&B Italia

The Cloud collection includes a series of benches, with or without backs, designed for public spaces such as receptions atriums and galleries. Based on a minimalistic floating element, the linear benches can be combined with curved elements to create free flowing compositions.

Naoto Fukasawa was born in Yamanashi Prefecture and graduated from Tama Art University in 1980. He has worked with Seiko Epson, designing wristwatch & wristTV technology; LCD TVs, LCD projectors and other equipment. He has designed a number of products utilizing state-of-the-art technology for start-up companies and for big brand name computer and communications related companies, and has won numerous design awards in Europe and the United States.

The sofa with upholstered bench-style seat, without backrest, is supported by a polished metal tube that conveys a sense of lightness and mid-air suspension. The backrests, shorter than the length of the seat, feature a narrow "turned-up" section at the top that can also function as an armrest. A quarter-circle element was conceived to combine benches of different sizes, with or without backrest, to produce seating areas of different sizes and shapes, and create original landscapes in public areas. Optional small wood table with ebony finish and matching corner unit can also be added to selection.

Naoto Fukasawa

Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa (b. 1956) graduated from Tama Art University in 1980 and quickly began working as a designer for the Seiko-Epson corporation. He came to the United States in 1989 and started working for the then upstart ID Two company, which employed only 15 people at the time. In 1996, he helped to set up their Tokyo office and served as its head while they became known as IDEO. Fukasawa remained with the company until 2003 when he established his own company, Naoto Fukasawa Design. To focus on household appliances and sundries, he created the ±0 brand, but was also becoming well known around the same time for products such as MUJI’s CD player (which is in MoMA’s permanent collection), mobile phones “Infobar” and “Neon,” as well as new works with Italian companies B&B Italia, Driade, Magis, Artemide, Danese, and Boffi.

B&B italia was founded in 1966 by the enterprising and charismatic piero ambrogio busnelli. The company quickly became an international reference point for upholstered furnishing thanks to a brilliant new technological process which introduced an industrial approach to manufacturing designer furnishings for the first time in the history of the sector. Over a period of decades, its innovative influence spread to other sectors in home and outdoor furnishings and finally reached the contract furniture market.
