Design Alessandro Mendini, 2021
Chrome-plated zamak, thermoplastic resin
Made by Alessi

Alessandro M., the corkscrew designed by Alessandro Mendini in 2003, is the object/creature that has brought to life unique characters over the years, in limited editions. For collectors of Alessandro Mendini and of his quick-change corkscrews: Alessandro M. Galla Placidia, embellished by Mendini's historic decoration that enhances its delicate design. The attraction of the lights, colors and mosaic vaults of the small mausoleum in Ravenna dedicated to the Roman empress Galla Placidia has inspired this iridescent play of shapes and colors, striking for the rigour of its geometries in contrast to its vivid and dreamy hues.

The Alessandro M. corkscrew is the self-portrait of its creator, Alessandro Mendini. The creation of a character capable, with continuous transformations, of fitting gracefully into the design scenario was far from easy. Groningen is a special edition, corkscrew made of thermoplastic resin and chrome-plated zamak.

Alessandro Mendini

A. Mendini

The work of Milan’s Alessandro Mendini has greatly helped to develop Italian design, but Mendini often incorporates different cultures. He became a leader in his field by pushing boundaries and challenging convention, helping to bring about the 1970’s Radical Design movement. His 1974 Lassu chair, built atop a pyramid structure, is just one example of this. Thinking beyond furniture, Mendini also creates graphics, interiors, paintings, and architectures, his first discipline. He has also authored several articles and books and juried various architectural competitions. In 1982, he co-founded the first post-graduate design school, the Domus Academy. Currently he teaches at the University of Milan and runs the Atelier Mendini practice with his brother, Franciso Mendini.
Alessi
Alessi was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi to produce crafted metal products for eating and drinking. In 1935, Carlo Alessi, son of Giovanni, was named chief designer. In 1945, he ascended to chief executive and designed the coffee service Bombe, an industrial piece manufactured in four sizes. That same year Carlo's younger brother, Ettore Alessi, joined the company as a technician. By the 1980s, Alberto Alessi took over the management of Alessi and launched the Alessi company into the design decade through collaborations with designers such as Philippe Starck and his playful three-legged Juicy Salif citrus squeezer.
