Design Caroline Slotte, 2012
Feldspar porcelain
Made by Rorstrand

What does an 80-year-old do who has been everywhere and done everything? Re-invent themself. So re-inventing Ostindia was the task given to Caroline Slotte in 2012. The result? Ostindia's rebellious cousin, Ostindia Floris, patterned with dense foliage that spreads its tendrils over the porcelain like a veil. Caroline also added new items with new lines to better reflect how we dine today. Now young Ostindia Floris is already well on its way to writing its own page in Swedish design history.

When Caroline Slotte began work on Floris she tried to imagine what the Ostindia pattern might have looked like if that precious piece of china had only just been discovered. The first picture that sprang to mind was of nature run wild. "I have been careful to keep the original pattern intact, so the traditional Ostindia flowers are still very much in evidence beneath (or beside) the new design," she said at the launch. Helsinki-born Caroline is a trained ceramicist whose work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Arts & Design in New York and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

Rörstrand porcelain is dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer safe.

Very disappointed. Was excited to find these to update some older lost pieces of Arabia Finland (made in Finland) and purchased four. While the descriptors "Rorstrand" & "Sweden" appear prominently in the ad copy (in retrospect, "made in" is conspicuously absent), I was very disappointed to find myself in receipt of mugs with "Made in Indonesia" stickers plastered on the packing box and mugs themselves. I can find very nice "Made in Indonesia" for about a fourth of the price paid here at any Home Goods. I was shopping for Scandinavian designed & made goods to complement the other pieces in our home and would not have purchased had it been stated clearly in the product copy.

Perfectly shaped mug
, more than a month ago.
An elegant shape with a comfortable handle, and that slight curve at the lip is key. It's exactly the shape I look for in a mug and it really does add to the pleasure of my morning cup of tea. I love the color and the design even more than I thought I would, so now I want to add some more pieces from this line to my breakfast table! However, the actual mug is not quite as pictured - it is rather large, and wider/shorter. I wish I had ordered the 10 oz size for myself, but my husband and teenage son think this size is just great.
