Design Kaare Klint, 1930
Solid wood, flame retardant cold foam, leather
Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son

Klint firmly believed that long-existing archetypes could and should inform contemporary design. In developing his Red Chair Series, he carefully studied several English chair designs, including the Chippendale, combining elements to create a new construction with a modern expression and excellent support.

First in the series was the Red Chair Large (1927), designed especially for the lecture hall at the new Danish Museum of Art and Design. In 1930, Klint designed the Large Red Chair with Armrests especially for Danish Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning's office along with a sofa to fit the grandeur of the historical setting at the Christiansborg Palace. Klint also developed the Small Red Chair (1928) and the Medium Red Chair (1933) to fit various tables.

The chair is made of solid wood and features a leather seat and back. The chairs Kaare Klint designed between 1927 and 1933 won international acclaim for their prominent roles at two key showcases for the finest in Danish design: the Danish Museum of Art and Design and the Danish Pavilion at the Barcelona International Exposition.

A workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908, was the birthplace of the Carl Hansen company. With a fast reputation for quality work, Carl Hansen confidently took on large projects like dining room sets and bedroom suites. However, Hansen eventually learned to capitalize on scaled-back versions of his popular sellers, realizing that their strongest asset was its hand craftsmanship and rationality. Carl Hansen invited Hans Wegner to create designs in 1949, launching a mutually beneficial relationship bringing success to the company and exposure to the young Wegner. Wegner was still relatively unknown, but soon gained wide acclaim that continues to today.
