alexander girard wool blankets

The two-toned patterns of Girard's wool blankets were originally conceived as printing motifs for decorative wall panels, fabrics or pillows. In collaboration with the Girard family, these graphic designs are now being executed in a jacquard weave to produce this fine collection of wool blankets. An additional effect of this weaving technique is seen in the alternating constellations of vibrant and muted color tones.

Merino lamb's wool is a high-quality natural fiber that comes from the first shearing of the Merino lamb. It is extremely lightweight, fine and soft while offering optimum heat exchange. A great deal of technical and manual expertise is required to process the high-quality natural fibers. It is for this reason that the blankets by Vitra are made by a German blanket manufacturing company with more than 100 years of experience in processing natural fibers. The high-quality implementation of the designs requires a great deal of handicraft. Please call the hive showroom with any questions: 1-866-663-4483.

Alexander Girard was educated in Europe as an architect. Returning to the United States in 1932, his designs defined a new kind of "opulent modernism", a look that became synonymous with 1960s America. His pioneering work in fabric design as well as his innovative commercial and residential interiors, captivated the public with their theatricality. Girard described himself as "a reasonable and sane functionalist, tempered by irrational frivolity."
