sphere table

The Sphere Table was developed in conjunction with the redesign of the North Delegates Lounge at the United Nations headquarters in New York. As part of a large-scale program to renovate the building's interior, the project was led by Hella Jongerius, who created special furniture pieces for the lounge. The Sphere Table is the first of these pieces to enter production at Vitra.

Hella Jongerius developed several motifs that are full of innuendo and ironic allusions. The first motif, called Lacemaker, shows the head of a girl engrossed in embroidery and is borrowed from a painting by the Dutch master Vermeer van Delft. The portrait is surrounded by a freely formed, looped pattern. The second motif, Pottery, consists of an arrangement of ancient-looking pitchers with little embroidered hearts rising up between them like bubbles. Jongerious uses various stitching styles and different coloured threads for the embroidery, which is realized with the aid of a computer-controlled machine. It gives the images additional charm.

The Sphere Table combines an solid natural oiled oak wood table with a large dome-shaped 'bubble' made of opalescent acrylic glass. The hemispherical screen can be attached to either the left or right side of the table, making it highly adaptable to individual needs. For this reason, the Sphere Table is ideal for the home office, where the bubble creates a private and sheltered space within a room. The Sphere Table combines a futuristic-looking sphere with the familiar archetype of a traditional table and thus makes a statement in any environment.
