risom side chair

Jens Risom's original 1941 collection for Knoll incorporates a natural aesthetic, characteristic of understated Scandinavian design. A KnollStudio classic, one of the first designs commissioned by Knoll. The side and lounge chairs are made of woven cotton webbing and wood, materials not subject to wartime restrictions, have now been updated with new fabric options and a variety of colors.

Danish-born Jens Risom received his education in Denmark. He later worked as a designer of furniture and interiors in the Copenhagen office of architect Ernst Kuhn. After immigrating to the United States in 1939, he designed Knoll's first commissioned collection, including a range of simple birchwood chairs in 1941. After World War II, he founded his own company and was among the first to manufacture furniture consisting of interchangeable standard components. Responsible for designs dating to the mid-20th century, Risom is a trustee of the Rhode Island School of Design and was knighted by Queen Margrethe of Denmark in 1996.

Risom side chair frame features select, clear maple hardwood in a clear or ebonized finish. Mortise and tenon construction. Upholstery; 100 percent natural cotton webbing available in ten colors. Nylon webbing (60% nylon, 40% cotton, with a stain-protective finish) is available in six colors.
