halo chair

Design Richard Hutten, 2014
Steel frame, upholstery
Made in Holland by Artifort

Inspired by Jeremy Harvey's Hello There, this design is built up entirely from circles. The Halo by Richard Hutten is a precocious, cheerful little chair. The 2mm-thick seat and back were formed using the rubber pad press technology in such a way as to make it very comfortable. The Halo is available in many powder-coated colors and gives any interior a cheerful accent.

Richard Hutten graduated at the Academy Industrial Design Eindhoven in 1991. That same year he started his own designstudio, working on a variety of projects such as: furniture, product, interior and exhibition design. He is one of the most internationally successful Dutch designers; a key exponent of "Droog Design", in which he has been involved since it's inception in 1993.

The foundations of Artifort were laid by Jules Wagemans. In 1890, he set up business as an upholsterer in Maastricht. His son, Henricus Wagemans, expanded the company into a furniture factory, which had a showroom in Amsterdam by the end of the 1930’s and was already well known nationally. The economic recession of the nineteen thirties forced H. Wagemans & Van Tuinen, as the furniture company was then known, to create a distinctive profile. The emphasis came to lie on functionality, comfort, and quality combined with aesthetically pleasing design and an innovative use of materials. The new brand name became Artifort, derived from the Latin word 'ars' meaning “art or knowledge”, and 'fortis' meaning “strong or powerful.”
