Design Ward Bennett, 1966
Welded tubular steel, upholstery
Made in the USA by Geiger®

Ward Bennett's Sled chair draws the eye to its base. Tubular steel welded into an X shape and mounted on parallel rails makes a bold statement. Upholstered in nearly any textile or leather available, the Sled chair's seat and back cradle the sitter. Distinctive design and welcoming comfort are two reasons Sled has been around since 1966.

Ward Bennett's story is a remarkable one. His career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in the garment district in New York City. At 15, he designed his first clothing collection; at 16 he left for Europe, where he continued working on fashions. Simplicity and comfort were always his goals. Bennett designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics. He is considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He was hailed by the American Institute of Architects for "transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects." Many of Bennett's designs are in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection as well as in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; he is also in Interior Design magazine's Hall of Fame.

Herman Miller was a West Michigan businessman who helped his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree, buy the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working at the company, which opened in 1905, since he was hired in 1909 as a clerk. De Pree knew his father-in-law was a man of integrity, so he decided to rename the company after him. By the middle of the 20th century, the name Herman Miller had become synonymous with “modern” furniture. Working with legendary designers George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, the company produced pieces that would become classics of industrial design.
