Wood, aluminum, steel
Made in Italy by Bensen

Format is a sophisticated open bookcase featuring an innovative system of adjustable dividers. Dividers can be placed in any pattern to create unique sculptural and functional configurations, ideal for a wide range of applications and environments.

The use of premium materials and carefully chosen proportions create a bookcase that is refined and visually intriguing, while its deceptively simple construction hides its adaptability and strength. Solid aluminum bars reinforce each shelf and contain a series of holes to secure the dividers wherever desired. Format is assembled from the bottom up, with each successive layer of shelves and dividers supporting the next. The thin panels give visual lightness to the design, while the thick bottom panel acts as a solid base with 8 concealed levelers to ensure stability.

Format is available in a range of different widths and heights. Shelves and dividers are available in White Oak and American Walnut veneers, and white and anthracite matte lacquer finishes. Optional drawer cassette is also offered in white, light grey or orange matte lacquer. Each shelf includes matching dividers. Other configurations and finish options available, please call to order. Assembly required.

Niels Bendtsen

Born in Denmark, Niels Bendtsen and his family immigrated to Canada in 1951. In place of a formal design education, he trained as an apprentice for his father, who designed and built Scandinavain furniture. Through working with his father, Bendtsen gained valuable skills and a respect for non-industrial, hand-built traditions, but he was also intrigued by new technologies and ways to satisfy incresing demand. Between 1963 and 1972, Bendtsen had his own retail store where he sold his father's furniture, as well as imported Scandinavian designs. He designed small items for the store, but it wasn't until he was in his early thirties that he truly began designing furniture. Dissatisfied with the quality and limited functionality of the furniture he received from his overseas manufacturers, Bendtsen sold his store, moved to Europe and became a full time designer.
Bensen is a design and manufacturing group founded in 1981 by Niels Bendtsen. Along with his staff, Bendtsen designs and oversees production of an extensive line of furnishings. The Bensen philosophy balances simplicity and honesty so that the designs may continue to grow in today's ever changing world.
