070 2.5 seat sofa with arms

070 2.5 seat sofa with arms

Design Kho Liang Le, 1964
Molded foam, wood frame, metal base in chrome or powder coat
Made in The Netherlands by Artifort

Designed in 1964 by Kho Liang Ie, who was Artifort's aesthetic consultant at the time. Relaunched in 2009 and yet the design has lost none of its power. With its comfortable, slightly raised and not too deep seat, the 070 provides a graceful contrast to all the excessive, soft, low lounge sofas of today. Simply slim, clean lines, an elegant base, and the single row of buttons as the finishing touch. There is such a thing as timeless design.

Kho Liang le came to the Netherlands in 1949 and studied design and interior design at the Rietveld Academy. In 1958 he was appointed aesthetic consultant and designer at Artifort. Kho Liang le attracted various foreign designers and his influence is felt right up to the present day. Apart from being a celebrated furniture designer, Kho Liang le also made his name as an interior designer. His work exudes the purity, warmth and freedom with which he wishes to surround people.

The foundations of Artifort were laid by Jules Wagemans. In 1890, he set up business as an upholsterer in Maastricht. His son, Henricus Wagemans, expanded the company into a furniture factory, which had a showroom in Amsterdam by the end of the 1930’s and was already well known nationally. The economic recession of the nineteen thirties forced H. Wagemans & Van Tuinen, as the furniture company was then known, to create a distinctive profile. The emphasis came to lie on functionality, comfort, and quality combined with aesthetically pleasing design and an innovative use of materials. The new brand name became Artifort, derived from the Latin word 'ars' meaning “art or knowledge”, and 'fortis' meaning “strong or powerful.”
