proust geometrica

Design Alessandro Mendini, 2009
Beech frame, cotton upholstery, plastic feet
Made in Italy by Cappellini

Proust was originally created in 1978 for the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. It was immediately recognized as an icon of twentieth century design and one of the most renowned and essential reference points in the quest for form and aesthetic perfection. Cappellini inherited the piece in 1993 and today Proust Geometrica, upholstered and hand-finished according to tradition, preserves the forms of the original armchair while refreshing them and breathing new life into the image and value of the original design.

Born in Milan, Alessandro Mendini is the former director of Casabella, Modo and Domus. The winner of a Compasso d'Oro and designer of the Groninger Museum in Groningen, the Casino in Arosa and the Forum in Omegna. He is a designer, architect and image consultant for Philips, Swarovski, Swatch, and Bisazza.

Proust Geometrica features a wooden frame, upholstered with a multi-colored fabric designed by Alessandro Mendini. Also available in the original version as Proust.

A. Mendini

The work of Milan’s Alessandro Mendini has greatly helped to develop Italian design, but Mendini often incorporates different cultures. He became a leader in his field by pushing boundaries and challenging convention, helping to bring about the 1970’s Radical Design movement. His 1974 Lassu chair, built atop a pyramid structure, is just one example of this. Thinking beyond furniture, Mendini also creates graphics, interiors, paintings, and architectures, his first discipline. He has also authored several articles and books and juried various architectural competitions. In 1982, he co-founded the first post-graduate design school, the Domus Academy. Currently he teaches at the University of Milan and runs the Atelier Mendini practice with his brother, Franciso Mendini.
Born into a family of furniture manufacturers, Giulio Cappellini began working for the family company in 1979, after earning his degree in architecture and studying business management. By the early 1980’s, Guilio’s leadership brought the Cappellini company into the world market from its three decade run as a handicraft furniture business. Hoping to expand the styles and materials used, Guilio scouted designers, bringing Jasper Morrison, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Marcel Wanders, Marc Newson, and Tom Dixon into the fold. Now, the firm boasts a varied, comprehensive collection rather than a singular style. Still, there are common threads: refined simplicity, dynamism, liveliness, humor.
