Design Matthew Hilton
American black walnut or American white oak
Made in Portugal by De La Espada

This solid wood chair brings nature to the dining room with simple elegance. The backrest emerges from the legs as a fin from the sea.

The company was launched in September 2007 and very soon after, made it's first Licence agreement for manufacturing and distribution of the products with De La Espada. The pieces shown here are the first of a growing number of high-quality products which will be made in relatively small quantities, using hand-skills based manufacturing.

Matthew Hilton graduated with a degree in Furniture Design from Kingston Polytechnic in 1979. He went on to design products for a variety of well known manufacturers. In 1985 Matthew set up the Matthew Hilton Design Studio. He has also been given the highest honor in the field of Industrial Design in the United Kingdom, by being named a Royal Designer for Industry in 2003. In September 2007, Matthew established his own brand, Matthew Hilton Limited as a place he could have complete creative control. In 2008, he was named Designer of the Year by Elle Decoration at the British Design Awards.

Alfredo Haberli

Alfredo Haberli (b. 1964) of Buenos Aires is now based in Zurich. He earned a degree in Industrial Design at the Higher School of Design in 1991. He then co-opened a studio with Cristophe Marchand until 1999, when he opened his own studio, Haberli Design Development. His clients include: Alias, Camper, Iittala, Kvadrat, Luceplan, Moroso, Ruckstuhl, Schiffini and Volvo. Haberli primarily designs everyday home furnishings. His striped, colorful Origo series from 1999 quickly became a popular seller and remains highly recognizable. With the series and in all of his works, Haberli manages to combine tradition with innovation, joy, and energy. He believes “observation is the best form of thinking” and the results yield everyday objects that are practical and easily paired with one another.
De La Espada was founded by Luis De Oliveira and Fatima De La Espada in 1993. Hailing from Porto and Madrid respectively and educated in London, the founders opened the first De La Espada store in London in 1996, when there was comparatively little quality contemporary furniture in the city. De La Espada's dedicated factory in Portugal specializes in hand crafted traditional construction methods to create modern furniture with timeless appeal and the warmth of solid wood. The De La Espada aesthetic evolved from influences including the Arts and Crafts movement, architects such as Tadao Ando, John Pawson and Alvaro Siza, as well as Scandinavian design from the 1950’s.
