"Less is more. A masterpiece of reduction."
-Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Eero Aarnio said about the Bubble Chair: "After I had made the Ball Chair I wanted to have light inside it and so I had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble. Since I knew that dome-shaped skylights were made in this way I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble that is bigger than a hemisphere. The answer was yes. So, I had a steel ring made, the bubble was blown and when the cushions were added the chair was ready, and the name was obvious: "bubble."

The Bubble chair is offered with leather upholstered cushions, chromed steel ring and 78.7" Length chain & hooks.

41.5" dia. | 31.5" d | 42.5" h | cushion: 24.8" L | 24.8" d | 2.75" h

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio of Helsinki introduced his Ball Chair in 1963, one year after starting his own office. He followed suit with his Bubble Chair, floating Pastil Chair, and Tomato Chair. Using mostly plastic and fiberglass (though he would later abandon fiberglass due to its potential danger to manufacturers), Aarnio’s chairs implemented simple geometric forms and were thus popular as set pieces in 1960s science fiction films, and remain recognizable as such. Many of his furniture designs display a playful element, and currently Aarnio’s new designs include toys, children’s furniture, and combinations of both.

The Adelta company is based in Vehmersalmi, Finland and remains the only licensed manufacturer of Eero Aarnio’s famous plastic furniture. These include the Ball chair, Bubble chair, Pony and Pastilli chair. The company began in order to make available the designs of Ellel Saarinen from the beginning of the 20th century, with the philosophy that “with furniture, good ideas can and should be reproduced and made available to as many as possible.”
