Design Maarten Van Severen, 2005
Stainless steel frame, MDF top coated with rubber lacquer
Made in Germany by Vitra

A-Table is one of the items of purist furniture which made Maarten Van Severen famous and has become his trademark. Like all his pieces, the table stands out for its symbolic shape and carefully balanced proportions. The name A-Table refers to the characteristic, A-shaped position of the legs. The first A-Tables were made as early as 1992 in Van Severen's furniture workshop. What is striking about the series-produced A-Table is the satin, deep black rubber lacquer - it has a wonderfully warm and soft feel and, like a natural material, becomes patinated with age.

Formal clarity and simplicity are distinguishing aesthetic features of Maarten Van Severen's designs. His work, handproduced in his workshop in Ghent Belgium, reflects his quest for perfection in form, detail and fabrication. Their appearance is restrained and elegant. Every element is structurally motivated and reduced to its essential form. Maarten works in a variety of different materials: aluminium and ply to bakelite and polyester.

The A-table is offered with stainless steel legs and black table top.

Vitra is a Swiss company dedicated to improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of design. Following in the tradition of Charles & Ray Eames, who have influenced Vitra’s approach to sustainability in many ways, product longevity is central to the company’s contribution to sustainable development; short-lived styling is avoided at all costs. This can be seen most clearly in the classical pieces of furniture that have been used for decades, had several owners and have then even ended up as a part of a collection.
